Sri Aurobindo Ashram Cottage Industries

Founded in 1949 under the guidance of The Mother (Mirra Alfassa), Sri Aurobindo Ashram Cottage Industries began by producing incense for daily use within the Ashram in Puducherry, India. As appreciation for these handcrafted fragrances grew, the incense gradually found its way to devotees and collectors around the world, with exports beginning in the early 1970s.

Located just outside the Ashram is Auroville, the internationally recognized township founded in 1968 as a place dedicated to human unity, creativity, and sustainable living. While separate organizations, both share a deep appreciation for thoughtful craftsmanship, simplicity, and harmony with nature.

Today, Cottage Industries continues to produce traditional Indian masala incense using many of the same hand-crafted methods that have defined its fragrances for generations. Each incense stick is made with a fragrant blend of aromatic woods, roots, herbs, flower petals, botanical extracts, and essential oils, carefully hand-rolled onto bamboo using natural binders such as honey or jaggery.

Among its most celebrated fragrances is Mattipal (No. 11), a signature blend named after requiring eleven formulations before receiving final approval from The Mother. Alongside classics such as Sandalwood, Rose, Jasmine, Amber, Musk, Ketaki, and Parijat, these fragrances represent one of India's most enduring incense traditions.

At The Everest Trader, we source these authentic Ashram incense blends directly from India and ship them from our California warehouse, making this historic incense collection available to collectors and enthusiasts throughout the United States.
